Background of the study
Local beliefs and cultural practices surrounding menstruation have long influenced women’s health in various communities, including Oredo Local Government. These beliefs dictate how menstruation is perceived and managed, often affecting health-seeking behavior and overall wellbeing (Adekunle, 2023). In Oredo, traditional notions about purity, shame, and social exclusion during menstruation create significant barriers to accessing proper healthcare services (Bello, 2024). Such cultural practices not only stigmatize natural physiological processes but also hinder educational and preventive health initiatives aimed at improving women’s health outcomes (Fashola, 2025). This study critically evaluates the local beliefs surrounding menstruation, examining their impact on health practices and exploring avenues to promote better health education and gender equity.

Statement of the problem
In Oredo Local Government, pervasive cultural beliefs regarding menstruation have led to the marginalization of women’s health issues. Misconceptions and stigmatization result in delayed treatment, reduced access to reproductive health services, and negative psychological impacts (Adekunle, 2023; Fashola, 2025). This entrenched stigma contributes to a cycle of misinformation and suboptimal health outcomes, highlighting the need for comprehensive research to bridge cultural practices with evidence-based healthcare strategies.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To evaluate the impact of local beliefs on menstruation-related health practices.
  2. To assess the barriers created by cultural stigma in accessing healthcare.
  3. To recommend strategies for improving menstrual health education and service utilization.

Research questions:

  1. What are the predominant local beliefs surrounding menstruation in Oredo?
  2. How do these beliefs affect women’s health and healthcare access?
  3. What interventions can mitigate the negative impact of these cultural beliefs?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Local beliefs significantly influence menstrual health practices.
  2. Cultural stigma contributes to reduced healthcare utilization.
  3. Educational interventions can improve health outcomes for menstruating women.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the intersection of culture and women’s health, offering critical insights into menstrual health challenges. The findings will assist in developing culturally sensitive health education programs and policies that empower women and improve access to healthcare services (Bello, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to evaluating local beliefs about menstruation and their impact on women’s health within Oredo Local Government, focusing exclusively on cultural practices.

Definitions of terms:

  • Menstruation: The monthly process of bleeding as part of the female reproductive cycle.
  • Cultural Stigma: Negative societal perceptions that lead to discrimination or exclusion.
  • Reproductive Health: The overall health of the reproductive system and its functions.
